Treatment for ADHD Children

An integrated treatment approach for children and adolescents with ADHD will ensure the best chance of success. The treatments are Behaviour Therapy and Medication respectively.

Behaviour Therapy

Children with ADHD often benefit from behavior therapy, which may be provided by a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker or other mental health professional. Examples of therapy include:

  • Behavior therapy
  • Social skills training
  • Parenting skills training
  • Psychotherapy
  • Family therapy

Medication

The medication can relieve symptoms and help the child to focus and concentrate on the task. It can only be prescribed by a medical professional. The medication used for treatment is divided into stimulant medication and non-stimulant medication.

Stimulant medications:

  • Methylphenidate
  • Dextromethylphenidate
  • Mixed salts of amphetamine
  • Dextroamphetamine
